i’ve installed os x on my first gen ipod (5 gigs)!
[edit] heh.. i have to go into detail here… when you install be sure you do a custom install, and remove almost all the extra software… unless you need it.. i guess… i have a couple external hard drives… one of which currently holds my itunes library. i’ve got a symlink to my itunes folder on my main drive and the ipod pointing to the external drive. which means, so long as i have my ipod and that external drive, i’ll have access to the same library as i have on the laptop.
i should also write a shell script that backs up my home directory… but that’s a lot of crap to back up nightly. (which i guess means it would hurt that much more if i didn’t have a recent copy eh?) currently, though, i’ve got to put some shell script/apple script together that will launch wiretap (records any audio playing on the laptop) and an itunes internet radio stream on schedule, save the resulting file, convert it to mp3 and then copy it to my ipod for later listening…. i know there are apps that do this, but i’d rather not pay for it, when i can use the experience…
maybe i’ll just do that rsync back up first. it’s probably more important.
this is a long blog…. [/edit]
os x takes up 1.5… not that it matters, i guess.. i don’t really need that much space for my ipod. the problem is just that i gotta manage it…
i’ve also got a battery life problems with it. i mean, it’s a couple years old so.. what do you expect? in any case, at one point it couldn’t charge and hold longer than 20 minutes, no matter how long i kept it charging.
i took the ipod apart, and unplugged the actual battery, and plugged it back in, put it all back together, and let it recharge. since then it’s been doing pretty good. it takes me to work and back. and then some.. so it’s got at least 2 or 3 hours now. i’m not sure exactly though, i don’t want to push it, you know?
in any case, i wonder if this freeipods.com thing will pan out. it’s legit as far as i can tell… if you want to help me out though sign up through here…
personally, i’d recommend going with the free blockbuster trial. it’s basically the same service you’d get with netflix (dvd’s through postal service anyway) but with the added two free in-store monthly rentals for times when you just HAVE to have a movie TONITE!
after trying it out, (and finally giving in and getting a tv [it's for niki i swear]) i think we’ll keep the blockbuster account… $20/mo for as many dvd’s as you can watch (at most three checked out at one time). if you time it right, you’ll have a constant stream of dvds going to your home (and out).
